Learn some of the common CrossFit terms you’ll hear around the gym — and what they actually mean.

1RM (One Rep Max)

The heaviest weight you can lift once with good form.

AMRAP (As Many Rounds As Possible)

Complete as many rounds or reps as you can within a set time.

Buy-In / Cash-Out

Extra work before (buy-in) or after (cash-out) the main workout.

Chipper

A longer workout made up of big sets that you chip away at until everything is done.

Clean

An Olympic lift where the bar moves from the floor to the shoulders before being driven overhead.

Complex

Multiple lifts performed back-to-back without putting the bar down.

EMOM (Every Minute On the Minute)

Perform a set number of reps at the start of every minute, then rest for whatever time is left.

For Time

Finish the workout as fast as you can.

Hang

A lift that starts above the knees instead of from the floor.

Heat

A scheduled start time for a workout or event.

Intervals

Repeated efforts with rest in between. Work, recover, repeat.

Jerk

The explosive drive that moves the barbell from your shoulders to overhead.

Kipping

A technique that uses momentum to make gymnastic movements more efficient.

Metcon

Short for metabolic conditioning — the heart-pumping, sweaty part of the workout.

Mobility

The ability to move through your full range of motion with control.

Pace

How fast you’re moving, especially on rowers, bikes or skis.

Power (Power Clean / Power Snatch)

A version of a lift caught higher, without a full squat.

PR (Personal Record)

Your best-ever lift, time or score.

ROM (Range of Motion)

How far a joint or muscle can move.

Rounds For Time (RFT)

Complete a set number of rounds as quickly as possible.
